Political Science Professor Charles Elder said the well-publicized Abramoff lobby scandal "undoubtedly reinforces the widespread suspicion and distrust of political authority that is endemic to the American character." Rep. Vernon Ehlers, Republican from Grand Rapids was appointed chair of the House Administration Committee in the wake of the scandal.
